Competency Recovery
At Pinkerton Academy, we are committed to supporting students in mastering key skills and concepts to ensure their academic success. Competencies address high expectations and deep understanding. All competencies for courses taken will be reported on the report card, along with the pass/fail grades for each competency. To receive credit for the course, a student must receive a final grade of 65 or better and pass all competencies for the course. Failure to do so will mean that the student will not receive credit for the course and will receive a grade of CF (competency failure). Students will be given opportunities to make up missed competencies within the competency recovery window established below.
This procedure below outlines the expectations and timeframes for competency recovery following the completion of a course.
Purpose of Competency Recovery
Students who fail a course with a final grade of “CF” have an overall grade of 65 or higher but have a failing grade in one or more competencies. Competency recovery is designed to give students a chance to revisit and demonstrate proficiency in essential learning objectives from a course. This process is aimed at helping students close gaps in their understanding and move forward with confidence in future academic work.
Timeframe for Competency Recovery
Competency recovery must be completed no later than 8 weeks after the conclusion of the course. For the summer of 2025, the deadline is Tuesday, August 12. This timeframe is essential for several reasons:
- Retention of Learning: Students are more likely to retain and apply what they have learned when they engage in competency recovery soon after the class ends.
- Prevention of Knowledge Gaps: Completing competency recovery promptly prevents students from developing significant gaps in their knowledge, which may become harder to address over time.
- Timely Transition to Credit Recovery: If competency recovery is not completed within the 8-week window, students will either need to retake the course or enroll in a credit recovery course. In credit recovery, students will go through the entire course material at their own pace. This self-paced format allows more time and structure to master the content. Students should contact their school counselor to discuss their options.
Semester 2 and full year classes only - In cases where a student is unable to attend any summer sessions to recover competency failures, an extension may be granted to allow the student to complete the credit recovery upon returning in the fall. To be considered for this extension, the student must submit a formal extension request no later than two weeks after report cards are issued. For the summer of 2025, the deadline is Tuesday, July 1. This request must be approved and must include a plan outlining how the recovery work will be completed, with a required completion date no later than four weeks following the first day of school (for the fall of 2025, the deadline is Friday, September 26). All students must complete the form (link is in the student section below). The form will have a spot to indicate if you would need the extension. A form will be sent to the student to complete and then forwarded to the parent/guardian for approval.
Student Responsibility
Students are responsible for registering to participate in the competency recovery program, which begins by completing THIS FORM. Students will then be sent the competency recovery contract that they must review, sign, and submit. Students must also take the lead in contacting the competency recovery teacher, staying on top of all deadlines, making steady progress, and confirming that all requirements are completed on time.
Teachers and academic counselors are available to support and guide students through the process, but it’s up to the student to stay engaged and take action early. Delays or missed steps may result in removal from the recovery program and the need to complete a credit recovery course to earn credit.
Parent/Guardian Role
We ask that parents and guardians actively support students in completing competency recovery within the 8 weeks. Staying informed about deadlines and encouraging regular engagement with recovery tasks will help students successfully meet academic expectations. Parents must also review, sign, and submit the competency recovery contract for a student to be registered. We thank you for your attention and collaboration in supporting student achievement.
