FAQ

  • How can I contact the librarian?

The librarian is Ms. Warburton and you can contact her by emailing [email protected].

  • How many books can I check out?

Check out the number of books that you need and can keep track of. We don’t have a hard limit on the number of books that you can take but we encourage you to only take the number that you can be responsible for.

  • What time are you open?

    Library

The posted time for the library to open is 6:40am but we are always open by 6:00am and you are welcome to come to the library then.
The library closes at 3:30.  On early-release days, the library closes at 2:30.

    Media Center

The Media Center is open from 6:45 to 2:10.

  • What’s the difference between the Media Center and the Library?

The Media Center is a space that only freshman can use during their study period. Anyone can go in to check out a book from the Media Center but only freshman can check in to use the Media Center during their study.

  • How do I find a book at the library?

You can search the Pinkerton Online Catalog for the books that we have at the library.  Once you have the call number, we can lead you to the right place for that call number.

  • How do I use the library during the school day?

The library and Media Center can be used during a student’s study period.  If the student has an A period study, the student first checks in at the Period A class and then can proceed to the library or Media Center.  For all other periods, the student can go directly to the library or Media Center.  If a student only needs a brief use of the library, a student can get a green pass from their study teacher to come use the library and then return to their study.

  • Can I use the library during lunch?

Students in Grades 10-12 may use the library during their lunch only if they do not have any scheduled study periods.  If there are extraordinary circumstances, please talk to the head librarian for extra permissions.  Freshmen may not go to the Media Center or library during their lunch.

  • Where do I start for my senior essay?

The best place to start is at the research guide for Senior Essays and also this list of the new books that we’ve added with good topics for this senior essay.  As always, you can ask for help at the library or email the librarian at [email protected].

  • Where do I start for my junior essay?

The best place to start is at the research guide for Junior Essays. That research guide will guide you to resources to help you choose a topic, find a book on your topic, and search databases for articles on your topic. As always, you can ask for help at the library or email the librarian at [email protected].

  • What are the passwords to log into the library databases?

By contract, we can’t post the passwords on publicly accessible sites. You can get those passwords on the library’s page on Aspen or by emailing [email protected].

  • Why use the library databases instead of Google?

Google is awesome but it is an index rather than a database. That means that Google has no control over the content that it is indexing and therefore there is no guarantee as to the reliability of the sources that you are seeing with a google search. When you are conducting school research, it is easier to find reliable sources when you use the library databases. The quality of the content in the library databases is controlled and more reliable.

  • Can I use my phone in the library?

Starting in August 2018, the library and Media Center will be a phone-free, disconnect zone during the school day. When you check in with the library or Media Center during your study period or during your lunch, your phone must be put away into your school bag and is not to come back out of your bag until after you leave the library. No phones at all, even for school work or for music. If you are planning to use the library during the school day, please be prepared to keep your phone away for the duration of the period.
